TO: Fresno Unified Employees & Retirees
DATE: February 5, 2015
On February 4, 2015, one of the nation’s largest health insurance companies, Anthem, Inc., announced a severe data breach that may impact more than 80 million individuals nationwide – including Fresno Unified School District employees and retirees. Cyber hackers gained unauthorized access to personal information about current and former Anthem members, as well as Anthem employees.
Anthem (Blue Cross) is the District’s benefits vendor for PPO Plan Option A and Plan Option B. As a result, we are working closely with Anthem to better understand the impact on our benefit-eligible employees and retirees. At this time, we know that the accessed information included:
- Current and former member and Anthem employee names
- Birthdays
- Member ID/Social Security numbers
- Street addresses
- Email addresses
- Employment information, including income data (Fresno Unified does not provide income data to Anthem).
Initial investigations show no credit card information or medical information was targeted or obtained. Anthem will be contacting individual members and will be providing credit monitoring and identity protection services to those who have been affected.
