Mammograms: Coverage that can save your life

Due for a mammogram? Don’t forget: An annual routine mammogram is indeed covered under your FUSD Employee Health Care Plan.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. Nearly 200,000 women are diagnosed annually with breast cancer, with the disease claiming more than 40,000 lives annually.

The CDC also reports that breast cancer is the most common cause of death from cancer among Hispanic women. Yet within demographic groups, Hispanic/Latino women are the least likely to have had a mammogram performed within the last two years. Among women covered by the FUSD’s Employee Health Care Plan, only 58 percent of women who should be getting an annual mammogram actually do so; that number remains well below national benchmarks.

The FUSD plan provides coverage for a routine annual mammogram, and this coverage is not subject to the $300 limit listed in the benefits handbook for other types of routine annual physical exams.

The bottom line? Use this benefit. With one routine mammogram per year covered, that’s one less reason not to have it done.
