Plan participants are wondering: Can dental diagnostic services like x-rays, CT scans and surgical implants prescribed by a dentist be covered under the JHMB’s medical plan?
This question is one where the answer is pretty clear. The JHMB’s health plans do not allow for the medical plan to be billed for procedures performed by or prescribed by dentists. Coverage for such services is limited to what is specified within the JHMB’s dental plans.
Bottom line: If it’s prescribed or performed by your dentist, it’s dental. If it’s prescribed or performed by your doctor, it’s medical. Either way, don’t forget to get a preauthorization for such diagnostic tests from the appropriate insurer before having them performed.
