Upcoming Changes to the Time to Submit Retiree Benefit Self-Payments

Gold Watch for RetirementThe due date for retirees submitting self-payments to the Fresno Unified School District’s Health Care Plan will change beginning September 1, 2013. This change is the result of a plan amendment approved by the District’s Joint Health Management Board. Currently, the Plan requires retiree self-payments for voluntary coverage to be paid to the District by no later than 5th day of the month of coverage. As a result of this plan amendment, the due date will change to the 20th of the month prior to coverage (e.g., the 20th of September for the month of October).

What Has Changed?
The Joint Health Management Board approved a plan amendment to the Continuation of Benefits sub-section titled “Retiree Voluntary Continuation of Coverage” on pages 78 and 79 of the District’s Health Care Plan Booklet dated April 1, 2012. The plan amendment is effective September 1, 2013 and includes a change to the Self-Payment Provisions for Voluntary Coverage.

What Do I Need to Do?
This notice only applies to you if you submit self-payments to the District for Retiree Voluntary Continuation of Coverage benefits. Beginning in September 2013, retirees submitting self-payments will have to pay the District by the 20th of the month prior to coverage. Given that this change is effective September 1, 2013, it will affect all payments required for the month of October 2013 and beyond. Payments for the month of October 2013 must be paid to the District by no later than September 20, 2013.
