Medicare Enrollment Required for Aetna®, Kaiser® Retirement Plans

JHMB

|

To be enrolled in one of the Fresno Unified School District retirement healthcare plans—Aetna® Medicare Advantage or Kaiser® Senior Advantage—you must be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.

You can only enroll in one Medicare Advantage plan and one Medicare Part D plan at once. If you enroll in another Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D plan later, you will be disenrolled from the Fresno Unified School District Employee Healthcare Plan. If you are disenrolled, you may not be able to re-enroll until the next annual open enrollment period or during a HIPAA special enrollment event.

Ensure Eligibility for Your Retiree Benefits

If you are eligible for Medicare, you can’t stay enrolled in your current medical plan. However, you can enroll in the Aetna® Medicare Advantage PPO Plan or the Kaiser Permanente® Senior Advantage HMO Plan if you’re enrolled in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.

You and your dependents may still not be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and/or B, or may be pending to provide an MBI (Medicare Beneficiary Identifier, or Medicare number). You and your dependent(s) must be enrolled in the same plan, with dependents who are ineligible for Medicare enrolling in the Aetna® Open Choice PPO Plan or the Kaiser Permanente® HMO Plan C, in alignment with retiree plan selection.

In order to be eligible to enroll in the Aetna® Medicare Advantage PPO Plan or the Kaiser Permanente® Senior Advantage HMO Plan, you are required to:

  • Be enrolled in Medicare Part A and B
  • Provide Fresno Unified School District Benefits Department with a copy of your Medicare ID card, including your MBI
  • Have a U.S. residential address on file with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Fresno Unified School District Benefits Department at the contact number below

The previous Medicare General Enrollment Period (to enroll in Part A and B) ended on March 31, 2024. You may have to pay a higher Part A and/or Part B premium for late enrollment. When you sign up during the General Enrollment Period, your coverage starts the first day of the month after you sign up.

If you successfully meet all requirements, you will then be enrolled in your chosen plan, and your current plan coverage will cease upon your Medicare Advantage Plan’s coverage becoming effective.

Keep in mind, if you don’t enroll in Medicare Part B, your current coverage—and your family’s coverage—will be ending at a later determined date.

To sign up for Part A and/or B, visit ssa.gov/medicare or contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. TTY users should call 1-800-325-0778.

If you’ve already enrolled in Medicare Parts A and/or B, we’re here to help.

When you provide your Medicare Part A/B coverage date, we can enroll you in the Aetna® Medicare Advantage PPO Plan or the Kaiser Permanente® Senior Advantage HMO Plan through Fresno Unified School District and the Joint Health Management Board. You can reach the District Benefits Office Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. PT, at (559) 457-3520.

Become a WellPATH Champion

If your site is not listed, please include your location below.

I agree to represent my school/department as the Wellness Champion for this school year. I understand the outlined roles and responsibilities of the Wellness Champion and will assist in the implementation and coordination of wellness initiatives. I agree to not only support the WellPATH Employee Wellness program by my participation, but to collaborate with my local management team to support the initiatives as well. I understand that the success of the program hinges on all employees being empowered to make informed decisions that positively impact their health. The WellPATH program can count on me to be a messenger and motivator and to help gather information from my co-workers, principals and managers to help foster a culture of wellness within Fresno Unified School District that supports good health.

I also understand that I may be asked to assist in scheduling rooms and programs (including wellness screenings, seasonal influenza program) at my location, displaying WellPATH brochures, posters, etc. in appropriate areas, and encouraging my co-workers to be involved in the WellPATH Employee Wellness program.
