PPO Plan Update for Medicare-Eligible Retirees & Covered Dependents

Understanding & Accessing Your New Benefits

If you are a Medicare-eligible retiree (or a covered dependent of a retiree) of Fresno Unified School District currently covered by PPO Plan A or PPO Plan B, you will be affected by a mandatory change to your current health benefits. Read on to learn more about what’s happening and how to continue using your benefits.

After an extensive review of various market options, two new PPO plans have been identified as programs that meet the JHMB’s high standards. The new Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan from the Joint Health Management Board and Fresno Unified School District offers additional benefits for Medicare-eligible members and Medicare-eligible dependents, including no deductibles, no out-of-pocket charges, and no co-pays in many cases. The Aetna Open Choice PPO plan, for non-Medicare-eligible dependents, resembles PPO Plan A. These plans will provide you with medical and prescription drug coverage featuring a provider network available in Fresno County and throughout most of the United States. The new plan(s) will automatically go into effect for eligible members on Saturday, July 1, 2023. We are pleased to present a program that provides a balance of quality, access, and affordability for our members.

You should receive your insurance ID Card in the
mail by July 1, 2023.

If you do not receive your card, follow these steps:

  • Contact Aetna® Customer Service at 1-888-267-2637 to obtain your member ID number.
  • Your member ID number can also be found on the confirmation letter that Aetna® will send once Medicare confirms your enrollment, which should arrive a few days prior to the ID Card.
  • Register or log into the member website at using your member ID number.
  • Print your temporary ID card or save an electronic copy any time after July 1, 2023.

The new Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan offers:

  • Provider access on a national scale
  • Customer service at a high level
  • Broad coverage with low to zero out-of-pocket expenses for members, in many cases
  • Additional services, including:
    • Transportation services
    • Meal delivery services
    • Audiology hearing aid benefits
    • Virtual behavioral health support from MDLIVE® through Aetna®

Using Your Benefits

To start using benefits, you don’t have to do anything. You’ll be automatically enrolled in the appropriate plan. The JHMB is committed to ensuring quality benefits for all its members, and to that end, the Board regularly reviews health programs that will deliver on that expectation. Great care is taken to ensure that provider access, customer service, and benefit levels all meet the high standard of quality that our members deserve.
